Description

Fresh peanuts, known as Fresh Peanuts, Groundnuts or Ground Nuts, are the seeds of the plant Arachis hypogaea, botanically belonging to the legume family. Despite the common Polish name "orzechy ziemne" (peanuts), they are not botanically nuts but a leguminous plant whose pods develop underground. Fresh peanuts differ from commonly available roasted and dried peanuts. Depending on the batch, they may have higher moisture content, a more delicate texture, and a milder taste, and their shells may look different than those of a fully dried product. Fresh Peanuts are a popular ingredient in the cuisine of many regions of Asia, Africa, and the southern parts of the United States. One characteristic preparation method is boiled peanuts, which are peanuts cooked in their shells in salted water until they reach the desired soft consistency. In Indian cuisine, fresh peanuts, also known as moongphali, mungfali, or singdana, can be boiled, roasted, and used in snacks, chaat, curry, and vegetable dishes. Once shelled, they can be an addition to dishes with rice, vegetables, and legumes. The taste of fresh peanuts is usually milder and less intensely roasted than that of ready roasted peanuts. Depending on the preparation method, their texture can remain firm or become soft and resemble other cooked legume seeds. The product can also be dried or roasted, but the time and method of preparation should be adjusted to the moisture and maturity of the specific batch. If the peanuts are sold in shells, they should be carefully inspected and cleaned before preparation, as being an agricultural product harvested from the soil, they may contain natural soil residues. Fresh peanuts should not be confused with ready-to-eat roasted products – the preparation method should be adapted to the product's condition. Individual pods may naturally vary in size, shape, color, the number of seeds inside, and degree of maturity. Due to higher moisture content, fresh peanuts are also more prone to spoilage than their fully dried counterparts and require proper storage.
